Calgary-based platform turns farmers' field data into a traceable, per-bushel carbon intensity score that buyers, lenders, and fuel producers can use

CALGARY, AB, Sept. 16, 2026 /CNW/ -- Hypocotyl Inc. today launched a platform that measures the carbon intensity of grain at the field level, replacing the regional averages that most of the agricultural supply chain currently relies on.

Food companies, fuel producers, and lenders increasingly need to know the carbon intensity of the crops they buy or finance, and that number must hold up in a procurement contract, an ESG disclosure, or an audit. Most figures in circulation today are estimates built from regional averages. They do not reflect what any single farmer actually did in the field, and they cannot be traced back to a reliable source.

Hypocotyl turns farmer production data into a measured carbon intensity score, for a specific crop, farm, and season. Every score states its boundary (cradle-to-farmgate), carries a data completeness percentage, and traces through four links down to the emission factor behind each input.

"Farmers make hundreds of decisions in a season that change the carbon intensity of a crop, and almost none of that reaches the buyer as a number they can use," said Brent Thumlert, founder and CEO of Hypocotyl. "We think carbon intensity should be measured the way yield is: at the field, from what actually happened. That is what the platform does."

Hypocotyl is backed by Carrot Ventures, managed by Verdex Capital, which co-founded the opportunity.
