OTTAWA, ON, Aug. 28, 2026 /CNW/ -- I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of King Harald V of Norway.
For more than three decades, King Harald served Norway with unwavering dedication and loyalty. As a reforming and modern figure, he shaped a monarchy that remained firmly rooted in tradition while embracing the changing character of Norwegian society.
He will be remembered not only for his commitment to Norway, but also for the humanity and devotion with which he carried out his responsibilities. The respect and admiration he inspired extended far beyond Norway's borders, reaching countries around the world, including here in Canada.
Canada and Norway share enduring ties rooted in our common values, our northern identity and our commitment to democracy, peace and international co-operation. Throughout his reign, King Harald helped strengthen the friendship between our two nations, most recently when my predecessor, the Right Honourable Mary Simon, had the honour of meeting with him during her official visit to Norway in February 2026.
Our thoughts are with the new king, His Majesty King Haakon VIII, and with Her Majesty Queen Sonja of Norway, as well as with all Norwegians, on this occasion.
