PRINCE GEORGE, BC, Sept. 3, 2026 /CNW/ -- The Honourable Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada (PacifiCan), convened a tariff response meeting with leaders from some of Northern B.C.'s most impacted industries and businesses to discuss the ongoing trade situation with the United States and its impact on workers, businesses, communities and our economy.

Northern B.C. plays a vital role in our provincial economy, with innovative businesses, skilled workers, abundant natural resources, and strong industries such as forestry helping to drive growth and exports. Today, many northern businesses and workers, like those across Canada, are facing uncertainty as tariffs and rapidly changing trade conditions increase costs, disrupt supply chains, and put jobs at risk.

The meeting brought together representatives from key sectors facing significant exposure to U.S. trade actions and those representing a wide range of impacted businesses.

Minister Robertson heard directly from industry leaders about the challenges they are facing, including impacts on workers and business owners, disruptions to supply chains, uncertainty for exporters, and the need for continued support. Challenges facing sectors that are key to Northern communities' prosperity were underscored, including the forest sector which has been particularly impacted by tariffs. These insights will help ensure the Government of Canada's response reflects the realities and needs of businesses across Northern B.C.

The meeting follows the Government of Canada announcing new measures to protect Canadian workers and businesses facing the impacts of U.S. tariffs, including $7.5 billion in new and enhanced support. This includes strengthening the Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI) with an additional $1.5 billion, building on the $1.95 billion previously announced, to help impacted small- and medium-sized enterprises manage immediate pressures and strengthen their long-term competitiveness and resilience.

Businesses in B.C. can access the RTRI through PacifiCan. In addition to delivering RTRI, PacifiCan is working with businesses to understand their circumstances and connect them with federal supports, with a "no wrong door" approach for those needing help.

The Government of Canada continues to take action to protect Canadian workers and businesses affected by U.S. trade measures. As the trade situation develops, the Government of Canada will continue to engage closely with industry, workers, provinces and territories, Indigenous partners and other stakeholders while advancing efforts to diversify trade and build a stronger, more resilient economy.
