Secretary of State McLean marks National Seniors Day

Canada NewsWire

GATINEAU, QC, Oct. 1, 2026 /CNW/ -- The Honourable Stephanie McLean, Secretary of State (Seniors), issued the following statement on National Seniors Day:

"Today marks the 15th National Seniors Day. National Seniors Day recognizes the incredible contributions of older Canadians to our country. Older persons play a crucial role in making Canada stronger through their volunteerism, caregiving and community involvement. I invite you to join me in showing gratitude to our family members, colleagues, neighbours and friends who are an important part of our social fabric.

This year marks another significant milestone—the 60th anniversary of the Canada Pension Plan. Looking ahead, we are ramping up to the 75th anniversary of the Old Age Security Program in 2027. Income support programs in concert with provincial benefits are key elements of the retirement income system that has provided six decades of financial stability for Canadians. In addition, the Government of Canada is committed to helping seniors live a secure and dignified retirement under programs such as the New Horizons for Seniors Program.

Supporting older Canadians is a shared effort. That's why we work closely with provinces and territories through the Federal/Provincial/Territorial Ministers Responsible for Seniors Forum. Together, we're tackling important issues affecting seniors, including innovative housing models, assistive technologies and financial mistreatment.

As we mark the achievements of 2026 and prepare for the future, our message is clear: Canada is committed to the financial security, dignity and well-being of older persons—today, tomorrow and for generations to come.

Happy National Seniors Day!"
